All three of CH3OH (methanol), CH3CH2OH (ethanol), and CH3COCH3 (acetone) can be mixed with water in any proportion. Each “hexanol” (actually there are three structural isomers: 1-hexanol, 2-hexanol, and 3-hexanol) is only partially soluble in water. This is because they each have a large amount of hydrocarbon-like surface area, which is hydrophobic, countering the -OH group, which forms hydrogen bonds and therefore is hydrophilic.
Because of the strength of the attraction of the OH group, first three alcohols (methanol, ethanol and propanol) are completely miscible. They dissolve in water in any amount. Starting with the four-carbon butanol the solubility of alcohols is starting to decrease.Such that from the list :CH3COCH3 is the list soluble or rather immiscible with water.
